Iron Man had a three film arc with Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Avengers Assemble, leaving flopping around like a fish while Guy Pearce breathed fire in Iron Man 3.
This might be much more neater with Captain America though, as according the directors of The Winter Soldier the star-spangled threequel could be the end of the line for Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.
“[Whether Captain America 3 is the end] is a hard question to answer because it gets to the specific of where the narratives are going,” co-director Anthony Russo told MTV.
“I will say this: yes, for satisfying storytelling, you want a beginning, middle and end. That’s the natural arc that we all thrive off of in narrative.”
There’s plenty of options for Cap’s future without Steve Rogers. In the arc that followed The Winter Soldier in the comics, Bucky Barnes eventually took up the shield and had a bit of a thing with Black Widow.
More recently Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, is stepping into the red, white and blue, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier definitely set Bucky star (and fan favourite) Sebastian Stan up for a real redemptive arc – pulling Cap from the river and vanishing into the proverbial night.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is available now on DVD for £10, Blu-ray for £15 or 3D Blu-ray for £17 from Amazon.co.uk. Find out more about the comic inspiration with Uncanny Comics.
