Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: Sarah Michelle Gellar set to return in new Hulu series

Buffy Summers is back! Hulu is reportedly nearing a pilot order for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to reprise her iconic role.

‘She saved the world a lot.’ It’s been 22 years since Buffy Summers saved the world a lot from the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and now it’s looking like our favourite Chosen One could be back!

A article from Deadline reports that not only is the beloved cult show nearing a pilot order from Hulu, but that Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. It’s also reported that Nomadland director and Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is set to direct the pilot, and it will be written by Poker Face’s Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

Buffy creator Joss Whedon is said to have no involvement in the reboot.

Sources have also stated a writers’ room will soon be started and that it is considered ‘likely’ that further original Buffy cast members will also return.

Some of the original Buffy cast could return for the reboot…

Gellar has always spoken fondly of the classic series, which ran from 1997 to 2003: “The beauty of Buffy was she represented every single one of us, whether it was a girl experiencing her first love, whether it was someone coming out to their parents,” she said in 2023 when speaking of her return to genre in Paramount+’s Wolf Pack. “Whatever that emotion was, there was something that resonated for everybody.” However, she has stoically said that a reboot is off the cards

Not anymore it seems, as apparently the rebook kicked off after Sarah Michelle Gellar made some comments during the press tour of her new Paramount+ series, Dexter: Original Sin: “It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she said on The Drew Barrymore Show. “But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Maybe is good enough for us! Deadline has also reported that the reboot has been described as ‘the next chapter in the Buffyverse’, and is executive produced by Gellar, Zhao, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as well as the original series’ executive producers Gail Berman of the Jackal Group and Fran Kuzui & Kaz Kuzui via Suite B. Also Dolly Parton is said to be executive producing the pilot, whose company Sandollar was a producer on the original. This just keeps getting better…

There’s no official word yet from Gellar. However, her recent Instagram post does send a certain ‘yummy sushi pajama’ throwback (Buffy stans, you know). Check it out…

Further indications that this isn’t all just a wonderful dream are dotted all over social media. The official Buffy The Vampire Slayer Instagram account and Buffy star Emma Caulfield (who played Anya in the show) have both also shared the Deadline story with the later adding the caption: “Aaaaand it’s out.”
