Speaking to Yahoo! at the Iron Man 3 premier, Joss Whedon gave an update on Avengers Assemble 2, and teased the appearance of two classic members of the team – speedster Quicksilver and the reality-warping Scarlet Witch.
“I’ve got these two characters,” said Whedon, “two of my favorite characters from the comic-book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.”
Whedon could easily be talking about any other number of brother/sister superheroes in the Marvel universe – Cloak and Dagger, Aurora and Northstar – but given Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch’s high profile, past-Avengers membership and a powers-set not currently represented on the team, it’s hard to see any other credible option.
The one catch, though, is the clear demarcation between Disney’s Marvel and 20th Century Fox’s Marvel means that this take on Wanda and Pietro Maximoff wouldn’t be able to make reference to their mutant status or their father, Magneto.
Speaking more generally about the film, Whedon added, “I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops.
“I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree… You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr]. Robert’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny.
“So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers; I try to think of this as its own movie.”
