avatarNews is beginning to circulate that the first official trailer for James Cameron’s highly-anticipated Avatar will screen with Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen on 19 June.

Much remains murky about the story of Avatar, but it will reportedly deal with an alien planet used as a mining colony by the US government. The film’s protagonist, played by Sam Worthington, is an injured ex-marine who undergoes an experiment to exist as an avatar on the planet, but it isn’t long before he is compelled to help the natural inhabitants in their battle for survival. Earlier this year it was reported that Avatar had a production budget of $300 million, although the claim has since been retracted.

Very little has been seen of the sci-fi extravaganza so far but excitement is already building at a wicked rate and any hint of a preview is likely to send hype into overdrive. On the face of it, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen does seem like a suitable film to trail, too, but given that Avatar is being labelled as the film that will drag digital 3D to mainstream audiences, it’s a shame that audiences won’t get the chance to sample the delights of Cameron’s third-dimension-ready preview at 3D screenings. Such is the plight, we suppose, of a film that looks destined to be the first of its kind.

Avatar is due for release on 18 December this year from 20th Century Fox.
