Arrow Season 5 adds Rocky star as Kovar

The new big bad of Arrow is very, very bad indeed

With Season 5 of Arrow already having been confirmed as the last one to feature the show’s now-customary flashbacks to Oliver’s time before becoming the Green Arrow, the showrunners had a fight on their hands to let the device bow out in style. Now, it appears that they have found the perfect actor to embody a threat fitting of the Arrow: Dolph Lundgren.

Yes, the actor, who has made his name in a number of hardman roles (as well as his now-iconic turn as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, he has also starred in the likes of Universal Soldier, Masters Of The Universe and The Expendables) will be rocking up in the fifth season of Arrow as Russian dictator Kovar. First mentioned toward the end of Season 4,

As a way to finish the flashbacks, it definitely makes sense. Out of all of Oliver’s back story, his various Russian underground connections still haven’t been fully disclosed. There has always been an interesting story there, and Lundgren is a fittingly imposing actor for what they no doubt have planned for him.

Incidentally, this marks the character’s first live-action appearance. More commonly known as ‘Red Star’ in the comics, he’s actually a good guy there, having been a member of super-group the Teen Titans. In the CW mould, it looks like Lundgren’s take will deviate greatly from this version.Lundgren joins a cast that includes returning cast members Stephen Amell, Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne and Echo Kellum, as well as newcomers Madison McLaughlin and Rick Gonzalez.

Arrow: Season 5 will air on The CW from 5 October 2016, and in the UK on Sky1 later in the year. You can downloadThe 25 Greatest DC Comics Ever digital edition from GreatDigitalMags.com now. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
