Peter Stormare, star of Fargo, The Big Lebowski and Constantine, has been cast in Arrow Season 3 as Werner Zytle, best known to DC Comics fans as classic Green Arrow supervillain Count Vertigo.
Weirdly, this is the second incarnation of the character that has appeared in Arrow, and TV Guide reports that he’s being “introduced as the new purveyor of the drug Vertigo, filling the role left vacant since the death of The Count.”
This character, then, will be known simply as Vertigo.
That’s two villains for the price of one (they missed a trick by not introducing Dead and then Shot, or Death and then Stroke, or…), and good news for the character’s 1978 creators Gerry Conway and Trevor Von Eeden, who have a new set of royalties to look forward to.
The Count was played by Fringe‘s Seth Gabel, who leaves some mighty big shoes to fill, but Stormare can be relied upon to bring his own unique brand of villainy to the role. He’s played drug barons, hired thugs and Satan himself… sounds like a perfect fit.
We can expect Vertigo to be one of the first bad guys to make life in Starling City interesting in the third season.
Arrow Season Three to The CW on 8 October 2014. You can buy Arrow Season 1 on Blu-ray for £11.25 at Amazon.co.uk.
