The rumours began to leak out a couple of weeks back concerning the choice of director for MGM’s Robocop reboot but such was the unexpectedness of it that it was dismissed in large part as just that, rumour and conjecture. MGM has now confirmed, though, that Darren Aronofsky, writer and director of Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain, has been snapped up to helm the film which has been fast-tracked by the studio for a 2010 release.
David Self (Thirteen Days/Road To Perdition) has been hired to write the script. While no story details have yet been released, it is expected that the film will be a sequel, of sorts, rather than a remake and will be set in Los Angeles 20 years after the events of the first film. While the prospect of a Robo-sequel has got us equal parts excited and worried, the acquisition of Aronofsky appeases us somewhat – he is unlikely to shape it along the lines of the kiddy-friendly TV series – but we do have to ask if a sequel is really needed at all. The original is damn near perfect and, as the sequels showed, impossible to top.
