American Horror Story Season 4 breaks its own rule

American Horror Story: Freak Show will feature a character from a previous season for the first time

American Horror Story: Freak Show will break with tradition and feature a character from a previous season of the show.

EW reports that Ryan Murphy has decided to cast Naomi Grossman in Freak Show, who will be reprising her role as Pepper from the series’ second season: Asylum.

Freak Show takes place roughly 12 years before the start of Asylum, and Murphy reveals that Grossman’s storyline “is sort of like what happened to Pepper before she went to the asylum.”

“What Elsa [Jessica Lange’s character] has done for 20 years is she goes around to hospitals and jails and rescues these ‘freak’ circus performers who are going to be shipped away to asylums and she signs the waivers and she becomes their guardians.”

Before we start getting all excited about what this means for continuity, it’s important to remember that logic has never had a particularly strong grip on American Horror Story‘s delirious style of storytelling. While it’s certainly interesting to see Murphy and Brad Falchuck revive a character from a previous season, we’re fairly confident that we won’t see Lange’s Elsa talk about a twin sister with a drink problem.

Having said that, this is American Horror Story we’re talking about and there is absolutely no way to predict what will happen from week to week. They could even bring back Stevie Nicks just to mess with us.

American Horror Story: Freak Show begins this October on Fox. You can buy American Horror Story – Season 1-2 on DVD for £24.30 at Amazon.co.uk and keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
