Agents Of SHIELD Season 4 casts Ghost Rider. Yep

Sorry folks: Nicolas Cage will not be starring in Agents Of SHIELD

If you were wondering where Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD would go after that Season 3 finale, the answer has suddenly become clear: the Ghost Rider direction. Yep, the Spirit of Vengeance himself will be roaring in for Season 4.

However, there are a few things to clarify before you get too excited. First of all, Nicolas Cage will not be reprising his role from the two movies (not that this was ever on the cards, but still, it should be said). Secondly, it won’t even be the original Johnny Blaze version portrayed by Cage – or Danny Ketch, whose introduction was teased in Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance.Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes

Instead, it will be the Robbie Reyes version, recently introduced as part of the Marvel Now! line-wide comic-book reshuffle. He drives a car instead of a motorbike, but hopefully they’ll ignore this little detail for Agents Of SHIELD. Motorbikes are way cooler, after all.

Playing Reyes will be Gabriel Luna, who you’ll most likely remember from Season 2 of True Detective, although he has also had extended roles in TV series Wicked City and Matador. More than anything else, it’ll be interesting to see just how the show uses the character. Before we’ve had fairly prominent names from the Marvel universe introduced, like Deathlok, Absorbing Man and Mockingbird, but Ghost Rider is the most prominent character yet.

In the meantime, here’s the press release:

“Season 4 will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into S.H.I.E.L.D., it’ll change everything.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is executive produced and co-created by Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”).  Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”) and Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” “Marvel’s Daredevil”) also serve as Executive Producers.   “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.

Agents Of SHIELD: Season 4 will air on ABC in the US from 20 September 2016, with a UK air date and channel to be announced. You can download The 25 Greatest Marvel Comics Ever digital edition from GreatDigitalMags.com. For all the latest TV news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
