While the usual suspects are still in residence, there are a few surprises both in terms of addition, rank, and omission. 2001: A Space Odyssey predictably claims the top spot on the AFI’s obelisk, while Star Wars: A New Hope comes in as a runner-up. Controversially, A Clockwork Orange takes the fourth spot, while Back To The Future brings up the rear. Frankly, we were surprised that Forbidden Planet didn’t make it anywhere in the top 10.

The basic list is below, and you can see the AFI’s page listing its choices here (link opens in a new tab).

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Star Wars: A New Hope
3. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
4. A Clockwork Orange
5. The Day The Earth Stood Still
6. Blade Runner
7. Alien
8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
9. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
10. Back To The Future
