Avatar and Star Wars Disney theme parks get opening dates

Pandora – The World of Avatar is set to open this spring

Disney’s US theme parks have been working on Avatar and Star Wars extensions for so long that we can’t actually remember how long we’ve been waiting for them. But the wait (whatever length of time that was) is finally almost over!

First of all, fans of James Cameron’s Avatar will be able to visit Pandora/be sad about missing out on Pandora (delete whichever is appropriate) this spring. CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger has confirmed that Pandora – The World of Avatar will officially be opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando on 27 May this year.

Even if you hate Avatar with every fibre of your being, you can’t deny that wandering around Pandora with a hot dog and a slushy wouldn’t be kind of awesome. The overbearing Floridian humidity would probably add to the experience too.

Pandora – The World of Avatar, complete with floating mountains and bioluminescent plants, is set to feature a family-friendly ride called Na’vi River Journey, on which Avatar fans of all ages will get to set off on a boat trip through the rainforest of fake-Pandora, and a maybe-not-so-family-friendly ride called Avatar Flight of Passage, which sounds a bit like Space Mountain but an Avatar-themed one that also features a Banshee.

Additionally, Iger announced that Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in California will be opening up the as-yet-unnamed Star Wars extensions in 2019. There’s a bit more of a wait for that one, but it looks like it’s going to be awesome. Just look at some of the gorgeous concept art:

So pretty.
Why can’t we live here?
Curse you, expensive air travel! Curse you to Jakku!

Avatar 2 is set to hit cinemas on 21 December 2018. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas from 15 December 2017. Get all the latest science fiction news with every issue of SciFiNow.
