7-time Wolverine star Hugh Jackman has long been teasing a retirement from the role as the fan-favourite clawed mutant, although it was assumed he would re-team with The Wolverine director James Mangold for the sequel, which is set to enter production right after Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Speaking to the Press Association, Jackman named a possible successor for the role, saying “I don’t know who could play [Wolverine]. Channing Tatum could probably play him.”

That’s the second time Tatum has been mentioned recently in the context of X-Men, with the franchise’s long-standing producer Lauren Schuler Donner saying, “I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum.

“That doesn’t have to be a great big movie. It’s a thief in New Orleans, it’s a whole different story. He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He’s such a sweetheart.”

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be released on 22 May 2014. You can buy X-Men: The Ultimate Collection on Blu-ray for £26.24 at Amazon.co.uk and find out more about the comics that inspired the film with new digital magazine Uncanny Comics.
