Avengers: Age Of Ultron Paul Bettany is Vision

Does Paul Bettany’s Vision casting prove that Ultron is Jarvis gone bad in Avengers 2?

Paul Bettany has been confirmed as playing the android Vision in Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

Variety confirmed that the British actor, who has provided the voice of Tony Stark’s AI system Jarvis in the Iron Man movies, will be playing the role.

In the comics, Vision is created by Ultron, who will be played by James Spader in the Avengers Assemble sequel, but turns against his evil master to join the side of good. Vision eventually married Scarlet Witch, to be played by Elizabeth Olsen, but somehow it seems unlikely that their story will progress so far in Avengers 2.

Still, there’s lots of room for the character to develop, and this could be a hint of how Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will fit into the growing Avengers team.

More interestingly though, previous teasers have emphasised a link between the Iron Man armour/Jarvis and Ultron, with rumours circulating that the evil AI is in fact Jarvis gone bad. Having Bettany in both Jarvis and Vision roles does suggest a link, but has it deliberately skipped a generation?

Is Vision going to be a part of Jarvis that was somehow downloaded into a ‘hard copy’, ie the android body, to protect himself from the influence of Ultron? Is Ultron, then, the result of a virus? Or is Ultron still the creator of Vision, only this time the result is much closer to the original Jarvis personality… for some reason.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron is released 1 May 2015. You can buy Avengers Assemble on Blu-ray for £16.83 at Amazon.co.uk.
