Despite racking up viewing figures of around 5 million during its regular Saturday night slot, the decision is final on the future of the series. A spokesperson for ITV had this to say about the cancellation:

“After three very successful series of Primeval there are no plans at the present time for it to return to ITV.” He then went on to say: “High quality drama remains a key part of the ITV schedule, although our current focus is on post-watershed productions.”

Stories are already circulating that the show had been cancelled due to budgetary cutbacks. Although this hasn’t been confirmed yet by Primeval’s creators, fans are no doubt already wondering what the future holds for the show. Could an upcoming US TV version and/or movie incarnation of the show carry the story on?

The show stared Ben Miller, Douglas Henshall, Andrew Lee Potts and Hannah Spearritt and centred around prehistoric activity in the present day.

DVD boxsets of all three series of Primeval can be purchased both online and in stores nationwide.
