Black Panther and Creed’s Ryan Coogler is back with a very different type of movie with Sinners, which sees him once more team up with Michael B. Jordan who plays twins who find something sinister (and supernatural) when they return to their hometown.
“It was my first time experimenting with the genre head-on, and I loved it,” Coogler says of those supernatural elements of the film. “I got to dig into the films that I loved and analyse why I loved them, what drew me to them. I tried to really lean on those influences and figure out a way to tell my story in that space.
“It’s interesting because it’s a genre that’s for the people. That’s for the popular consumers of film. But it’s also a genre that comes up when people ask about great pieces of art.
“I think that it’s because it feels ancient. It feels like the first stories we probably told around a fire, but it also always feels fresh somehow, so it’s really interesting. I’m so excited to try my hand at it. ”
The movie has an incredible cast starring alongside Jordan, including Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye), Wunmi Mosaku (Passenger), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods).
We sat down with Steinfeld and Mosaku to talk about discovering their own lineage when filming, the movie’s music and heartbreak, and just why it’s so hard to explain what Sinners is about…
Indeed, Coogler also encourages audiences to watch Sinners at the cinema: “The movie was made to be seen with a crowd and with people that you don’t know,” he enthuses. “It made sense for it to feel modern and immersive, and I thought that the IMAX and Super Panavision format really pushes it into perspective.
“I think that people want to experience something they can fall into. Even young folks. Everybody is living through their phones now but I do think people want to fall into worlds.
Sinners is in UK cinemas 18th April
