Get your fezzes, Stetsons and party hats at the ready; Doctor Who celebrates his 50th birthday next year (despite being about 900-years old). We interrogated star Matt Smith on what fans can expect, and he reckons it will be just as big than the James Bond celebrations.
“Yeah, I think absolutely. That’s the plan completely,” he says. “I think for it to get to 50 is remarkable, and I’m very proud to be in a show with that history and heritage and the legacy. To be the sort of incumbent Doctor when it’s his birthday is fantastic. We’re going to make it the biggest year of the show ever, on a global scale hopefully.”
Smith also shared a little on what we can expect around that time, aside from the confirmed documentary about the genesis of the show by Mark Gatiss…
“We’ll make a 50th anniversary episode special, and then they’ll be all sorts of live events I would’ve thought that surround that,” he reveals. “I think we’re going to make it a big year for Doctor Who on the BBC. I think that’s the plan.”
Live events has got us thinking up the possibilities – maybe a live episode like soaps tend to do to celebrate big anniversaries, or a special Who convention, perhaps? Matt Smith does seem to have caught the con bug, having appeared at San Diego Comic Con and London’s recent MCM event. What would you guys want to see?
