True Blood books: Who will Sookie end up with?

The Sookie Stackhouse Southern Mystery novels that inspired TV show True Blood are coming to an end. This May, the 13th and final installment, titled Dead Ever After, will wrap up Charlaine Harris’ series, and the question every fan wants answered is who the hell is Sookie going to end up with?!

There’s a few candidates to choose, from but the ones at the forefront of everyone’s minds are vampires Bill and Eric, whom Sookie seemed to fall for the hardest. “Why limit it to just Bill and Eric?” Charlaine Harris laughs, talking exclusively to SciFiNow. “It could be neither, it could be nobody!”

Author Charlaine Harris is ready to say goodbye to Sookie Stackhouse

She’s had no end of supernatural suitors, from Bill and Eric to Alcide and Quinn. Does Harris think any of them were particularly well-suited to her? “I think she’s learned something from all the relationships she’s had, from starting out as a young woman who had never had a serious relationship or a satiable relationship, she’s compressed a lot of experience into the last few years,” she says.

“In Sookie years it’s only been two and a half years since the beginning of the books. Talk about compression! She has really learned a lot in a short amount of time, it’s been an amazing learning curve.”

One thing is for certain, however: our Sook will never become a vampire. It’s a refreshing change when other famous fang-bangers are willing to drop dead for their immortal boyfriends. “That would be the worst thing I could do to someone who’s been very kind to me,” she says. “She would hate that so much because she loves the sunshine.”

After 13 years of Sookie in print, we wondered whether it would be sad for Harris to let her go? We’ll certainly miss her indomitable spirit to get over torture-by-fairies and countless attempted homicides and still never forget her manners when someone stops by the house. She’ll get you a cold drink or some warm True Blood and bake you one of her Grandmother’s famous dishes if you feel low.

Harris says: “I don’t want to do Sookie a disservice by trying to write her story when I don’t have anything left to give it. It’s bittersweet – mostly sweet.”

Dead Ever After will be published 7 May 2013 by Gollancz. Pre-order it now for £16.14 from Amazon.co.uk.
