It’s that time of year again! The UK’s premier horror and fantasy film festival, FrightFest, is back to haunt screens in London, and we here at SciFiNow are thrilled to once again partner with them to give you a chance to experience the very best in genre cinema. Following the success of our giveaway for Test Screening last year, we’re doing it all over again, and this year, two lucky winners will be joining us for a screening of the mind-bending new film, Transcending Dimensions.
From Thursday, August 21st to Monday, August 25th, FrightFest 2025 will be taking over The Odeon LUXE Leicester Square and the ODEON Luxe West End, transforming the heart of central London into a haven for genre fans. With a staggering lineup of 69 features from 14 countries and four continents, the festival is a celebration of the inventive, transgressive, and diverse. Co-director Alan Jones has called it the UK’s number one destination for genre fans, and with 19 world premieres and a ‘First Blood’ strand, it’s easy to see why. The schedule is packed with screams, premieres, and carnage, from the bone-chilling Bambi: The Reckoning to the thought-provoking The Toxic Avenger and a 4K restoration of the British shocker The Descent.
But the film we’re most excited about is one that promises to be a journey unlike any other: Transcending Dimensions. This 2025 film, directed and written by the celebrated Toshiaki Toyoda, is not your typical horror flick. Our own Anton Bitel reviewed the film, calling it a “strange, ritualized spirit war chronicle that transports both characters and viewers to inner and outer space.” The film plunges you into a world where a bearded man finds himself in a dark cave, a place that feels like a Platonic “illusory prison-house.” From there, the narrative unravels in an unpredictable and illogical way, demanding that you supply your own connections to the dream-like sequences.
The story introduces a fascinating cast of characters, including Master Hanzo, who preaches about “dimension-transcending journeys,” and an atheist assassin named Shinno, who is hired to find a missing boyfriend and eliminate Hanzo. The film constantly blurs the lines between reality and illusion, leaving you to question whether Hanzo has true magical powers or is a mere charlatan, and even if some characters are truly alive. The pacing is slow and deliberate, and the drama could be psychological, spiritual, or even extraterrestrial. It’s a film that subverts all expectations, with the opening credits not even appearing until 38 minutes in. Watching the film is like being transported on a “psychonautic journey through pure cinema’s self-reflecting hall of mirrors,” drawing stylistic comparisons to surrealist classics like The Holy Mountain and Personal Shopper.
For those who crave cinema that is more than just a surface-level narrative, Transcending Dimensions is a must-see. It’s a film that will challenge you, provoke you, and leave you thinking long after the credits roll. And now, you have the chance to experience its enigmatic brilliance on the big screen!
The screening of Transcending Dimensions will be on the Main Screen on Friday, August 22nd at 3:15 PM. We have two tickets to give away to one lucky winner. To enter the competition, all you have to do is answer the following question:
