Avengers 2’s Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will add conflict

Joss Whedon teases role of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Avengers 2

Speaking to IGN about bringing Wanda and Pietro Maximoff – the reality warping Scarlet Witch and super-speedy Quicksilver – into the cast of Avengers Assemble 2, Joss Whedon teased a potential point of conflict for the newly bonded band of superheroes.

“You know, they had a rough beginning,” said Whedon.

“They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with the Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

Both raised in isolated Eastern Europe and estranged from their biological father in the comics – a fact no doubt to be increasingly played up by the fact 20th Century Fox have the rights to Magneto – they were inducted into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before Iron Man inducted them into the Avengers to rehabilitate them.

Obviously the mutant aspect will be absent from their story (or perhaps just implied), but perhaps Whedon’s Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will start off as desperate criminals or naive terrorists – that Saoirse Ronan is the template for Scarlet Witch definitely implies they’ll be at the beginning of their story.

Scarlet Witch can be quite highly strung, but that’s nothing compared to the hyper-aggressive, protective and arrogant Quicksilver, so if we see even a hint of that in the Avengers sequel, then we’re in for some quality head-to-heads.
