Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets new trailer blows our minds

Luc Besson’s Valerian unleashes an eye-popping new trailer

A new trailer for Luc Besson’s upcoming Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets has arrived and it is a glorious riot of colour, creatures and action. This is exciting, guys.

“In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other.  There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.”

We also have some new pictures of the weird and wonderful creatures…

Omelites are a species composed of organic cells and metallic atoms. They are expert programmers and have developed a society based on advanced information technology with an ability to mentally interact via thought-messages with other species and technology. They are responsible for keeping Alpha, the city of a thousand planets, at the cutting edge of technology and security.”

Bromosaurs are enormous creatures that graze on the seabed of the Galana Sea on Alpha, the city of a thousand planets. Their respiratory system filters water and expels it in purified form from an orifice on top of its head that is similar to a whale’s blowhole. This purification process attracts a very fragile animal with exceptional sensorial powers, the Mylea jellyfish, which clamps onto the bromosaur because it needs highly purified water to survive. In return, the jellyfish, which can read minds, enables bromosaurs to communicate as if they are logged onto a huge computer network.”

“The Azin Mö are the medical doctors of Alpha, the city of a thousand planets, intergalactically famous for their extraordinary materialization abilities and immortal nature. They can produce any organic cell and so have the gift of spontaneous regeneration. They also have the ability to “teleport”, but they require several days to recover from each trip, during which time they are physically and mentally feeble, which makes them paradoxically vulnerable. Over the centuries, they have been a favorite target of mercenaries and space pirates seeking to usurp the species’ powers.”

Igon Siruss is a mercilessly violent space pirate at the seat of a criminal empire and a public enemy of the galaxy. His bloodthirsty reputation greatly contributes to striking terror in the hearts of innocent travelers who have the misfortune to sight his ship, the Fark’ar.”

The original comics Valérian And Laureline by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières had a huge impact on a legion of sci-fi filmmakers, including George Lucas and Besson himself, and you can see that the director of The Fifth Element and Lucy has thrown himself into this eye-popping world.

The film stars Dane DeHaan (Life After Beth, Chronicle) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) in the leads, as well as Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Rutger Hauer, Alain Chabat and John Goodman.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets will be released in cinemas on 4 August 2017. For more news about the biggest movies, pick up the latest issue of SciFiNow.
