Cowboys and Aliens almost out-Smurfed at the weekend

Plus, Deathly Hallows Part 2 hits a box office milestone.

Cowboys and Aliens just narrowly beat kids’ nonsense The Smurfs at the weekend, taking nearly $36 million versus The Smurfs’ $35.6 million. Cowboys was apparently below studio expectations, so its chances of becoming a franchise will likely rest on its international reception – The Smurfs, I’m sure, will develop into a Chipmunks-sized cultural nightmare.

Harry Potter also passed the $1 billion mark over the weekend, a huge number for the film, and already the highest-grossing entry in the popular series of film adaptations. It is the best one, after all. Maybe people are going to see it again.

Unfortunately, Transformers: Dark of The Moon will also cross that billion number this week.
