Ten of the most interesting sci-fi futures

by James Rundle

Some of the best (and wholly depressing) futures depicted by the genre.

coruscant32. Star Wars
Released: 1977
Director:
George Lucas
Starring:
Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher

People are in love with the grimy world of Star Wars, for some reason. We’re not entirely sure why, if you want dirty roads and crowded markets, try Camden on a Saturday morning. That being said, the universe building in this film franchise is second to none, and while we wouldn’t want to live on Coruscant, it still looks pretty cool.

Ten of the most interesting sci-fi futures

starfleet_academy_061. Star Trek
Released: 1966
Creator:
Gene Roddenberry
Starring:
William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley

Who wouldn’t want to live in the Federation? They’ve got unlimited food for everyone, clean power, a very pleasant disposition in the general populace and good-natured leaders. As opposed to what we have now, which is overpriced slop served at fast food joints, impending ecological catastrophe, and streets filled with kids who have a peculiar talent with knives. Beam me up, Scotty.

Liked the list but you forgot the future of The Road… OK, maybe that’s not such a pleasant place to live! Would love to have replicators and holosuits in the future…

What’s “Star Wars” doing in there? Future? Wouldn’t it rule itself out by being set “a long, long time ago…”?

    • Stu said:

And if you’re gonna pick “The Time Machine”, you could’ve at least picked the more memorable 1960 version! Tut!

    • James Rundle said:

      You’re entirely correct.

Nice compilation! I would have also included “The Fifth Element,” with intergalactic cruise ships, flying taxi cabs, and weird but wonderful couture.

You said the universe in Star Wars is second to none, yet you gave it second place. Seems a bit contradictory.

    • James Rundle said:

As with all of our lists, it’s: ‘Ten Of the most interesting’, not ‘The ten most interesting’. The numbers are there for convenience rather than to signify order.

    • Grosvenor said:

Certainly not “The Fifth Element” a future with Bruce Willis in it would be frightening and sad.

Star Wars all the way baby!

    • Adam said:

Stu nailed it….”Star Wars” set a long time ago….still, that past, is what I’d like to live in….Coruscant cool, yes, but I’d love to live on Naboo…

    • Greg said:

Well, Great to see a good Sci-fi got number one. And as for Star Wars … beware while I blast you with my magical powers … hmmm …….

    • Alex said:

Hmmm… unfortunately the Federation wouldn’t exist for very long as human nature would have those with greed get into power, then after a while it would go the way of the Soviet Union…

    • Amber said:

Potential spoiler here, but Caprica’s not actually set in the future (if you’ve seen the reimagined BSG, you know what I mean). Anyway, I was still pleased it made it onto a top ten list. : )
