Ten of the best… showdowns

Some of our favourite sci-fi smackdowns.

spider-man-2-41-alfred-molina-dr-octopus2. Spider-Man versus Doctor Octopus
Franchise: Spider-Man
Factions: Superhero versus Supervillain
Film: Spider-Man 2

After disposing of the Green Goblin in the first movie, Spidey is faced with a more challenging confrontation in the sequel, squaring off against his idol Doctor Otto Octavius. In what has go to be one of the most exciting fight scenes every committed to film, this battle of body and (quite brilliant) minds takes place on a speeding train after a series of earlier shuffles has got Parker’s spidey sense all riled up. Punching their way through New York City, the moment is constantly ‘swinging’ in opposing directions but, as we’ve come to expect from our favourite web-slinger, he eventually comes out on top, saving several feckless civilians in the process.

20061010_mgo_g90_150.jpg1. Luke Skywalker / Darth Vader
Franchise: Star Wars
Factions: Father versus Son
Film: The Empire Strikes Back

Though Luke had already destroyed his dad’s shiny new Death Star, it isn’t until Empire that the family members meet face to face. Luke gets to practice his newly acquired Kedi skills, but he is still no match for the half man, half (killing) machine that is Darth Vader. Wonderfully reflecting the larger struggle of the defiant Rebellion versus the all-powerful Galactic Empire, the showdown doesn’t last long, with Luke getting his hand lopped off and Vader spilling the kind of secrets that should be reserved for The Jeremy Kyle Show. Nevertheless, it does set the scene for the rematch, when Luke faces both Vader and Palpatine and (with a little help from Skywalker senior) comes out on top.
