Ten of the best… showdowns

Some of our favourite sci-fi smackdowns.

1084074_f2486. Captain Kirk / Mr Spock
Franchise: Star Trek
Factions: Friend versus friend
Episode: Amok Time

Cue the ‘da na nanana nah’ soundtrack as Spock and Kirk face-off as part of a mating ritual. Not with each other, you understand, but Spock has his eye on a Vulcan philly but must dispose of Kirk to get to her. Spock ‘kills’ his friend but feels so guilty that he decides not to get married and return to the Enterprise, where he finds Kirk alive and well. Kirk was, in fact, injected with a drug which simulated the signs of death, and that’s why Spock was able to defeat him.

terminator-2_55. T-800 / T-1000
Franchise: Terminator
Factions: Metal versus metal
Film: T2: Judgment Day

Despite being a far superior model made of morphing liquid metal and boasting one hell of a mean streak, Robert Patrick’s T-1000 lacks the… how shall we put it… heart of Arnie’s T-800, and as a result is always one step behind. When the two do meet in a smelting plant at the end of the movie, it’s a tense affair. Arms are crushed, shapes are shifted and shoulder sockets are punctured. The acting might not be the best, but the visual effects more than make up for it. A big thumbs up to all concerned.
