Ten of the best… Start Trek Original Series episodes

by James Rundle

Strange new worlds, new civilisations, and a hell of a lot of Shatner.

We’d probably say that ‘Arena’ is the most iconic episode of Trek, for both good and bad reasons. For fans, it’s a great Kirk-centric instalment, and for detractors, the man in the rubber Gorn suit provides endless ammunition. We love the charm of the retro costume, though, and class this as one of the finest.

Almost universally regarded as the very best Original Series offering, if not the very best episode out of the entire franchise, ‘The City On The Edge Of Forever’ has won endless critical acclaim since its broadcast, and remains a showcase for some of the best (and hammiest) acting in Trek.

Um, do you really mean dagger of the mind, cause your description fits ‘What are little Girls Made Of’ a lot better?

Oh dear, actually who wrote this….have you seen or heard of ‘City on the Edge of Forever’? Is ‘Let that be your last Battlefield’ REALLY better than Amok Time?

      Think about it.

Damn good episodes there guys, especially the alternate reality one. Liked the Armageddon one too and I’ve recently collected the Star Trek Original Series as part of that magazine and DVD combi that came out a while ago. Great show, and wouldn’t Star Trek 2 benefit from having an up-to-date Gorn in there?….dreams…. :)

All good episodes, but not including ‘Space Seed’ in a top ten list; shame on you!

City On The Edge Of Forever is actually on the fifth page of the article, and while Amok Time is a great episode, I preferred Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.

As for the Dagger Of The Mind comment, I’m really not sure where you’re coming from.

Cool pic, James! Glad to see he’s still going strong! Any chance I can work for your mag or on the website? :)

‘Even with the addition of the penis-shaped rock that Kirk uses to brain a Lurch-like character..’ this is from ‘What are little Girls Made Of?’ and not ‘Dagger of the Mind’

‘City on the Edge of Forever’ is indeed the best episode but ‘Journey to Babel’, ‘Amok Time’ and ‘Space Speed’ should definitely have been on the list. Glad to see ‘The Corbomite Manoeuvre’ there though, I always thought it was a really underated

Although the character of Sarek played by Mark Lenard also appeared in The Next Generation, that wasn’t his first appearance. He already had played a key role in the Original Series second season episode “Journey To Babel”.

‘City on the Edge of Forever’ is indeed the best TOS episode and I’m glad to see ‘The Corbomite Manouvre’ there as I’ve always thought it was underated. I think ‘Amok Time’, ‘Journey to Babel’ and ‘Space Speed’ should’ve been there though
