Installing iTunes does cause problems for Windows users, it mucks up your codecs and it’s difficult to completely uninstall. It mostly affects those who make audio recordings or those who use codecs like OGG and FLAC and would totally ruin anyone’s QuickTime Alternative install.
It was forbidden at BBC Broadcast / Red Bee coz it caused so many problems and I personally had to rebuild several workstations from the ground up while I was there because of it.
If you just need raw numbers of people downloading it then there’s a few other ways of doing that. If you’re getting some demographic data from iTunes then that’s a different story I guess.

Ah, so it’s only for stats? Makes sense.

You do know your web software can also give you stats on the downloads outside of iTunes? Then you could just add the two together! ;)

So in essence, you’re asking Readers to download and install an additional piece of bloated software just to download an MP3?

Not something I’d be happy with, must be honest.

There’s no charge, it’s available through iTunes, therefore you need iTunes to listen to it. Which is free, and doesn’t need an iPod to run. Trust me, I don’t have an iPod, and I use it, it’s actually a decent piece of software.

It allows us far more ability to aggregate statistics on who’s listening to it, the amount of hits, that sort of thing.

Simple concept.

Fair enough – there appears to be a little reticence in explaining why a simple MP3 is not made available for those without an iPod – guess you must have your reasons for not wanting the extra listeners. Forgive me if there’s a “charge” attached – in which case I’ve been downloading it illegally! Oops!

Yes, it is a blindingly obvious rule! :)

Computer + Internet != iTunes
