The upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine lays the groundwork for a possible Deadpool spin-off movie: “The film nicely tees [Deadpool] off for his own spin-off film,” 20th Century Fox’s Jeff Katz says.

Deadpool, who is played by Ryan Reynolds in the movie, was subjected to the same experiments as Wolverine and was left mentally unstable and disfigured as a result.

A Deadpool movie would join the list of a number of other X-Men spin-off projects that are currently in various stages of development. David Goyer has written and is set to direct X-Men Origins: Magneto, and Chuck creator Josh Schwartz has been hired to write the script for X-Men: First Class.

Gavin Hood’s Wolverine movie, though, has been the subject of media speculation about clashes between the director and Fox. The film is set to be released next year.
