Wicked the Musical film finally has a release date, but it’s ages away

Wicked’s Elphaba and Glinda are hitting cinemas in 2019

First of all, for people who don’t already know there’s a Wicked film happening: there’s a Wicked film happening.

Second of all: It already has a release date! Musical/life enthusiasts will be able to catch Elphaba and Glinda in cinemas on 20 December 2019. That seems like a really long way away but at least we know there’s time for Universal to do a really good job of it.

No cast has been announced just yet, but Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) is set to direct, with Marc Platt (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) acting as producer. The screenplay is being penned by Winnie Holzman, who also wrote the script for the musical, and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz is coming back to take care of the music.

Wicked is based on the book Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West by Gregory Maguire, and tells the story of the Wizard Of Oz‘s main antagonist’s college years, before she became a villain. Wicked is one of the longest-running Broadway and West End shows of all time.

Wicked is in cinemas from 20 December 2019. Get all the latest fantasy news with every issue of SciFiNow.
