New Torchwood: Children Of Earth trailer

Many people genuinely enjoy Torchwood – indeed, SciFiNow hasn’t exactly lambasted previous series – and it remains a high point in the British sci-fi calendar, but there is a creeping suspicion that it’s a show struggling to form its own identity.

Sadly, for our money, the new trailer for the upcoming five-part mini-series, Children Of Earth, compounds this sneaking sensation. Is it camp, family-oriented fun like its parent show, Doctor Who? Is it an adult thriller that demands to be taken seriously? Is it a weird, sexualised cross between the two? Can it cope with a full-on supernatural element on top of all this tonal confusion? To be perfectly frank, after this new preview, it’s hard to care.
