The Walking Dead Season 3: Actress believes her character “has to die”

Warning: potential spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 3.

For those who haven’t read up to The Walking Dead #48 then look away now…

In the comics, Lori gives birth to a baby girl not long before the prison is stormed by the Governor. She attempts to escape, but is fatally shot in the back and tragically crushes her infant under her weight. It’s a pivotal moment for Rick’s character, and one that actress Sarah Wayne Callies believes should happen in the TV show. “I’ve said from the beginning, not only am I OK with Lori dying, but I think she has to,” she says. “I’ve played this character with an eye toward an end.”

She also added that former showrunner Frank Darabont wasn’t keen on the idea, “Frank Darabont and I actually – before he was tragically and unfairly removed from the show – we used to argue about it. I argued that it was necessary to kill Lori and I feel very strongly that for all of the other deviations we may have from the comic-book, killing Lori does something to Rick that is vital for the story and can’t be done any other way.”

Whether or not current helmer Glen Mazzara is partial to the pitch remains to be seen. Fans will likely find out later this year when the 16-episode third season airs on FX in the UK and AMC in the US.
