The Vampire Diaries fans, brace yourselves: Nina Dobrev is leaving the show.
Dobrev, who has played heroine Elena Gilbert and various doppelgängers since 2009, announced that her departure is planned for the end of Season 6, after uploading a picture of herself and the show’s executive producer Julie Plec on Instagram:
In a statement posted on The Hollywood Reporter website, Plec said: “Saying goodbye to Nina is both bittersweet and beautiful. After six-plus years together, the entire cast and crew of The Vampire Diarieshas reached a level of closeness that I don’t think any of us ever expected.
“Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold. We will miss Nina and the 400 characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble.
As The Vampire Diaries has revolved around Dobrev’s character for six seasons, her absence is sure to shake things up a hell of a lot. There’s no telling what will happen, besides heartbreak and forceful denial.
