Supergirl Season 1 adds Maxwell Lord to its roster

CBS adds another recognisable name to Supergirl Season 1

With CBS’s new series Supergirl edging even closer (it will premiere on 23 October in the US, with a UK air date hopefully following soon after), expect to see a revolving door of the DC universe’s rogue gallery, much like there has been in Arrow and The Flash. Indeed, Supergirl has kicked off the process with a big name of their own: Maxwell Lord, as reported by Collider.

To be played by Peter Facinelli (who you’ll most probably recognise as Dr Carlyle from the Twilight saga), Lord has a complicated history in the DC universe. Having started life as a shrewd businessman who plays a big part in the formation of the Justice League, he later becomes a criminal mastermind and develops telepathic powers, with one of his more notable acts of villainy being the murder of Ted Kord, aka the Blue Beetle.

The character’s official synopsis for the show describes him as “a green tech billionaire who enjoys a friendly rivalry with Cat Grant and a fascination with National City’s newest arrival – Supergirl.” This description leaves things open for both sides of his personality to come out. Basically, it looks like Supergirl has its very own Lex Luthor.

Regarding the casting of Facinelli, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said, “Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I have been fans of Peter for years.  We’re beyond thrilled to have him join us on Supergirl’s first adventures bringing the iconic Maxwell Lord to life.”

This isn’t the first time Lord has shown up on the small screen, having been played by Gil Bellows in a Season 9 episode of Smallville. More intriguingly, he was also set to be the main antagonist in George Miller’s aborted Justice League film, to be portrayed by This Is The End‘s Jay Baruchel.

Supergirl will air from 23 October on CBS in the US, with a UK air date to follow. For more about the comics that inspired the TV series, pick up the 100 All-Time Greatest Comics: Revised Edition bookazine now.
