Supergirl casts Teen Wolf star as Superman

Supergirl Season 2 has finally found its Kal-El

Ever since hearing the news that Kal-El himself would finally be making an actual in-person appearance as the Man of Steel in The CW’s Supergirl TV series, we’ve been waiting in anticipation to see who will be next to follow in the steps of George Reeves, Kirk Alyn, Christopher Reeve, Tom Welling, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill et al. Now, we finally have a name of the latest incarnation of Superman, and his name is Tyler Hoechlin.

Fans of MTV’s Teen Wolf will instantly recognise Hoechlin for his role as werewolf Derek Hale, while he’s also had roles in movies like Road To Perdition, Hall Pass and Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!. In Supergirl, he will show up in at least the first two episodes of Season 2 as the show makes its transition from CBS to The CW. The nature of his role is unknown (maybe he’ll show up to investigate whatever it was that’s in the pod?), but it’s nice to see that he won’t be permanently kept in the shadows in an ‘oh look you just missed him’ capacity; that would have become gimicky very quickly.

As for Hoechlin himself, it’s clearly a great choice. He’s gone the distance in Teen Wolf, showed his dramatic credentials with an excellent turn in Everybody Wants Some!! recently, and he definitely looks the part. Besides, it’ll be nice to see a relatively cheerful (at least that’s what we’re expecting) Kal-El after the relentless doom and gloom of the DC Cinematic Universe. Fingers crossed.

He joins a cast that already includes returning cast members Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Mehcad Brooks, Jeremy Jordan and Calista Flockhart.

Supergirl will return to The CW in the US later in 2016, with a UK air date to follow. You can download The 25 Greatest DC Comics Ever digital edition from GreatDigitalMags.com now. For more news about the biggest movies, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
