Steven Moffat: “Don’t expect to learn everything about the new companion in Who Christmas special”

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat on the secret companion, played by Jenna Louise Coleman

Doctor Who showrunner and Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat is to be awarded a BAFTA Special Award for his outstanding creative writing contribution to British television.

In an interview with Digital Spy, he confirmed that the Doctor’s new companion, played by former Emmerdale actress Jenna Louise Coleman, won’t be revealed until Christmas day and even then we won’t know her full story.

“Don’t expect to learn everything!” he warned. “We’ve got a good story and there are some proper legitimate surprises in it. I’m excited by it. I think we’re going to do some fun stuff.”

Moffat is realistic about keeping all the details under wraps though, adding, “We can’t really contain everything, because people will crawl all over us with cameras and sneak views of scripts and call-sheets. Something will get out. But we’ve been fairly sly, so let’s wait and see.”
