Star Wars Episode 7 Lupita Nyong’o up for unknown role

JJ Abrams has met with 12 Years A Slave’s Lupita Nyong’o for Star Wars: Episode 7

lupitaLupita Nyong’o could follow her Oscar-winning performance in 12 Years A Slave with a starring role in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII.

THR reports that the breakout star of Steve McQueen’s acclaimed drama met with Abrams regarding the female lead of the new Star Wars film.

As with all of the casting rumours, details are so scarce as to be practically non-existent, but as per the site: “Sources say that Nyong’o met with JJ Abrams only a few weeks ago, just before the Academy Awards where she took home the statuette for best supporting actress for her work in 12 Years A Slave.”

So far it seems as though Girls star Adam Driver is the closest thing to a confirmed cast member as the film’s villain, apart from Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, although Breaking Bad‘s Jesse Plemons, Attack The Block‘s John Boyega, Downton Abbey‘s Ed Speelers and theatre actors Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher are up for the Jedi hero role.

The site suggests that Nyong’o could be up for “a descendent of Obi-Wan Kenobi, which has been described as a non-Caucasian role. That is separate from the search for two roles, female and male, for characters in their twenties.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is due in cinemas 18 December 2015. You can buy Star Wars: The Complete Saga for £57.99 on Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk.
