Star Trek Into Darkness: Benedict Cumberbatch ISN’T Gary Mitchell

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Star Trek Into Darkness villain is called John Harrison say Paramount

At first everyone thought he was Kahn (even though the dates don’t add up), and then everyone thought he was Gary Mitchell, but Sherlock and The Hobbit star Benedict Cumberbatch has finally had his Star Trek Into Darkness character named by Paramount and that name is… John Harrison.

According to the official caption of the above photo: “(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.”

Obviously, Harrison could still be inspired by both rumoured characters, and perhaps now Abrams and co have the Star Trek blessing courtesy of Leonard Nimoy and other nods to the lore, they’re planning a greater break with canon in order to tell a story that’s uniquely theirs. Or maybe that’s a red herring.

Star Trek Into Darkness is due in cinemas 17 May 2013. Pick up the first film on DVD for £5.09 or Blu-ray for £8.79 from Amazon.co.uk.
