Roberto Orci has been named as the director of Star Trek 3, replacing JJ Abrams.

Variety reports that the writer will make his directing debut on the Star Trek sequel, having campaigned to take the reins from JJ Abrams for some time. Abrams is, of course, busy with Star Wars Episode VII, although he will produce.

No plot details are known, but Variety notes that the main cast, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, is expected to return. Orci is writing the script with JD Payne and Patrick McKay. His long-time writing partner Alex Kurtzman is not involved after the two decided to write and direct different projects.
