Star Trek 2 Benedict Cumberbatch

Star Trek 2 Benedict CumberbatchSpeaking to MTV about his role in the as yet untitled Star Trek sequel, Benedict Cumberbatch was quick to correct them on the assumption that he’s playing the villain, saying wrly, “”I don’t think we do know that, actually. That’s just supposition. And that’s all I’m going to say about it.

“[JJ Abrams has] great ideas. It’s been great fun to prep. I start [shooting] next week, which is really exciting, and I can’t say any more than that.”

The actor, who’s become a fan favourite through the title role of Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat‘s Sherlock, revealed that he had only come to Star Trek canon fairly recently.

“I started [becoming a Star Trek fan] slowly, but quite genuinely, when [JJ Abrams] rebooted it with this last film,” said Cumberbatch.

“I have lots of friends and family, all sorts of people who’ve loved all of the series and all of the films. I’ve been introduced to it through them and now I’m going back to them and asking them questions so I can get up to speed with true Trekkies.”

Star Trek 2 is set for release 17 May 2013.
