Will Robot Overlords TV series have Grabbers director?

Remember Robot Overlords, the slow-burning alien-invasion movie starring Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson? You can be forgiven if not. Despite sneaking in and out of cinemas with relatively little fanfare, it looks as if the story will be continuing, with director Jon Wright announcing at MCM Comic-Con that a TV series based on the film is in the offing.

Tony Wood will oversee the new show for Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions, who produced the movie.

Speaking at MCM, Wood said the TV series would “reimagine” the story “for an international family TV audience.” He then went on to compare it to the likes of Quatermass And The Pit and Doctor Who, saying it will be “packed with special effects and rebellious excitement.” If the comparisons to these British sci-fi institutions are anything to go by, we could be in for a treat here.

Further elaborating on what to expect, Tempest said: “This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the UK will be very proud of.”

Despite being the one to break the news, there’s no word on whether Wright himself will be attached. Considering his work on the brilliant Grabbers, this could definitely benefit from his involvement, and we hope it happens.

Robot Overlords will be available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray from 10 August – read our review here. For news on the biggest movies and TV shows, pick up the latest issue of SciFiNow.
