Penny Dreadful Season 2 is gearing up for production and two new cast members have been announced.

Deadline reports that Patti LuPone has been cast for a guest role as “a mysterious character of great importance in the life of Vanessa (Eva Green).” LuPone was a recurring guest star in American Horror Story: Coven, playing the coven’s Christian neighbour Joan Ramsey. She also played herself in the last season of Girls.

Digital Spy reports that Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) as “Scotland Yard investigator Bartholomew Rusk”, while Vikings‘ Sarah Greene will play “Evelyn Poole’s powerful daughter Hecate” and Johnny Beauchamp will play that Gothic staple: “a young man with an unusual past.”

Meanwhile, guest stars Helen McCrory, who played Madame Kali, and Simon Russell Beale, who played Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle, have been promoted to season regulars.

The news of McCrory’s regular status doesn’t come as a huge surprise as it was announced at Comic Con that her character, who hosted the second episode’s unforgettable seance, will be the main villain of Season 2.

After a wobbly start, Penny Dreadful really improved in the second half of its first season. Fingers crossed that we’ll see that momentum continue.

Penny Dreadful returns to Sky Atlantic next year. You can pre-order Penny Dreadful Season 1 on Blu-ray for £22 at Amazon.co.uk
