Guillermo del Toro is currently writing Pacific Rim 2 with Zak Penn.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, the director revealed that a script is currently in progress. “I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

The site notes that Legendary Pictures hasn’t signed off on the film at all, although they have said that they’d be open to it, and that his script includes both Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Beckett and Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori. ““I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening,” he joked.

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

Del Toro is currently promoting The Strain, which starts on Fox in the US in July, and is filming his period horror move Crimson Peak, starring Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska.
