This is a dilemma - I have always been a fan of Joss and to hear first Firefly got cancelled and then Dollhouse was a major blow. He had amazing orginal ideas for both shows that I as a fan got. But it seems America (or non-Whedon or scifi fans) didn't get it so the shows got cancelled. If the shows had gotten more time to be fleshed out (Buffy and Angel really didn't kick into gear since their second and third seasons), then both Firefly and Dollhouse would have become bigger classics. Now how about a Dr. Horrible series or the Ripper one? You know it makes sense!

[Perhaps the most confusing part about this thinly veiled attack on the network, apart from its inconsistency (”the network pretty much wanted to back away from the concept five minutes after they bought it” versus “I actually think they did a good job”)]

I think with "good job" he commented on that Fox marketed it right/well, not that they didn't want to back away from it. Which makes sense, because once the show's in the can, they might as well make the best of it(It might do well), in this case they marketed it right but they didn't believe in it. At least, that's how I read it.

Honestly though, I think if you(as a developer) cannot develop a concept that sells well to a large audience, then it's your fault the show didn't do well. If you want your show to last more than 2 seasons, selling a show to a large audience is the name of the game. Like it or not, he didn't do that well. Fox thought the show could work, America didn't. And in the end, that's what matters. It's that balance of making something that is interesting an good and intelligent and what not, but also make it accessable for a larger audience. Difficult, sure, but that's the game.
