Speaking to Digital Spy, The Dark Knight‘s William Frichtner revealed that his rebooted take on classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles nemesis Shredder has a very different origin story from that of the comics.

“This is not the Turtles you’ve seen before,” he said, adding: “I play a guy named Eric Sachs, and you find out who Eric Sachs really is.

“There’s some big surprises about who he is and his relationship with the Turtles.”

In the comic, Shredder is Oroku Saki who joins the ninja Foot Clan to get revenge on the man who killed his older brother, Hamato Yoshi – the owner of the pre-mutated rat and future Turtles mentor Splinter. Becoming head of the Foot Clan’s American operation, he uses it as his personal crime army in a war against Yoshi.

The animated series simplified the story considerably, making both Yoshi and Saki competing members of the Foot Clan, with Saki framing Yoshi for murder. Instead of Splinter being Yoshi’s pet, Splinter was Yoshi mutated.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set for release on 8 August 2014. You can buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The Complete Seasons 1 and 2 for £10.86 at Amazon.co.uk.
