Director Nimród Antal has been confirmed to direct Predators. The news comes following an interview between Ain’t It Cool News and producer Robert Rodriguez. Over the course of this discussion the Grindhouse helmer had this to say about the appointment:
“I always loved Kontroll, where he [Antal] proved himself to be a very resourceful and original filmmaker. When I saw Armored, I could tell he’s also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he’ll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast.”
Rodriguez continued: “We really want to go with a character-driven action movie, because that’s what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this.”
Next up on AICN’s agenda was the little matter of the film’s plot, and already it seems that Rodriguez and his writing team have some ideas in place:
“…it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So, like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning.”
Rodriguez then went on to form a comparison, which hints more at the direction this franchise reboot will be heading. “Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in its own right,” he then said, “and that’s what we want to do with this.”
Predators is currently in pre-production and at this time has no release date or cast announced.

It still should have been Neil Marshall…
I agree Russ. Marshall has the raw power to drag this franchise back kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
I think “raw” is the key here – he has that British style right down the lighting looking less “glossy” than it does on a big Hollywood style movie. It would have been violent, frightening and brutal.
All that said, he’s done troopers vs unseen nasty in Dog Soldiers and is – sort of – retreading that path in Centurion.
So maybe a case of too much of the same too soon for Marshall. It’s like they always say in the DVD interviews “Oh, yes, Nimrod was always my first choice for this movie,” – but I wonder if Neil was and turned it down?
This is getting better all the time, Rodriguez(smart and inventive director) puts forward the director of Kontrol(original movie) and compares him to Tarantino. Interesting.
That comment of his does make me wonder what the movie would be like if Tarantino directed it.
Awesome probably!
It’s going to require a great deal of skill to ‘rebrand’ this lumbering mess of a franchise. The first film was a classic – the second film was wonky, but not a complete disaster. However, the two Alien VS Predator films (especially the last dreadful one) left a lot to be desired.
