Luke Cage series casts Claire Temple’s mum

Golden Globe nominee confirmed for Marvel’s next Netflix series

Considering the generally positive reception enjoyed by Marvel’s Jessica Jones, people are now looking towards the next series, Luke Cage, with anticipation. Coincidentally, even more news about the show is being released, with the latest being confirmation that Sonia Braga will be appearing in the series.

According to Marvel, she will be playing the mother of Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), who having previously appeared in Daredevil, is also confirmed to be showing up here.

There isn’t a great deal of comic-book inspiration for the role, but Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb seemed happy to get Braga, the recipient of Golden Globe Award nominations for Kiss Of The Spider Woman, The Burning Season and Moon Over Parador, on board.

Sonia Braga will star in Marvel’s Luke Cage

“A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed,” said Loeb in a statement. “In Marvel’s Luke Cage, fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for.”

“Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? ‘Nuff said. I’m tuning in,” added showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. “When it came to finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was the perfect choice and has been a Godsend.”

She joins a cast that already includes Mike Colter (Jessica Jones), Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2), Theo Rossi (Sons Of Anarchy) and Alfre Woolard (The Last Ship).

Luke Cage will air on Netflix sometime in 2016. You can find out more about the characters and the comics that inspired them by picking up the latest edition of 100 All-Time Greatest Comics.
