Rumours are whizzing around that the highly-anticipated Star Wars TV show now has its first writers attached. Currently, the favourite to be announced as one the TV series’ scribes is Australian TV producer and writer, John Edwards. If appointed, Edwards, who has been responsible for a clutch of successful domestic shows, including Out Of The Blue and Fireflies, will likely find himself under intense scrutiny from the most dedicated fanbase in the world.
Earlier this week, SciFiWire reported that “the show is assembling high-quality writers from the Aussie TV industry, including writers from Love My Way and Secret Life of Us, who have been approached by Lucas’ longtime producer Rick McCallum.” The news, rather predictably, set sci-fi forums ablaze, with some corners unconvinced by the calibre and suitability of the talent. Only time will tell if they are proved correct.
The Star Wars TV show will take place between the events of Episode III and Episode IV. In January last year producer Rick McCallum confirmed that Boba Fett “will be an instrumental part of the series”.

I have a bad feeling about this!
As an Australian (and Star Wars fan) who has locally made television inflicted on me daily, this is not welcome news. Australian ‘drama’ is hardly above the quality of Neighbours or Home and Away, it just happens to be on once a week rather than each weeknight. Perhaps George Lucas wants writers more on his level.

I would be more interested in the show if it filled in gaps about how Luke and Leia grew up, but darn, I’m not really that interested in Boba Fett (I know I’m one of the very few fans who aren’t).
I don’t know anything about Australian TV, so I don’t really know how to react about the writers. I don’t think this TV show is something they should hand to someone who is only a so-so writer … it’s never good to take a risk like that when it comes to Star Wars.
It might be better if Lucas actually got some producers and writers who actually have experience with sci-fi shows.
