Following the box office success of Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a sequel has been in development at Paramount and the writer-director has an update for us.

Speaking to Shock Till You Drop, Wirkola revealed that he’s finished the script and it’s up to Paramount to decide when they want to get the ball rolling.

“I’ve written the script for it. I’ve given it to Paramount and it’s up to them now. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. Jeremy [Renner] is so busy these days, I don’t know how they’re going to juggle all of that, but it’s up to [Paramount]. We’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I’m smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that’s an R-rated action film.”

Renner certainly is busy, with the Avengers, Mission Impossible and Bourne franchises all taking up his valuable time, so it’s hard to think when he would get time to return to kill more witches with Gemma Arterton.

While we weren’t massively impressed with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (read our review here), we were surprised by how much fun Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead was, and if Wirkola can bring that same level of energy and invention back to the business of witch-hunting, well, we’d like to see it.

You can buy Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters on DVD for £5 at Amazon.co.uk. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
