Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters may not have had the most glowing critical reception, but it was a hit for Paramount in 2013 and a sequel was greenlit fairly promptly. However, there have been a few snags along the way, including the fact that writer-director Tommy Wirkola opted not to return.

Now, The Tracking Board reports that a new director has been found to step into his shoes. Bruno Aveillan is apparently the man to continue the story of the fairytale siblings who grew up into badass witch hunters, and the site says that Paramount is “looking to pump a little more excitement into the franchise.”

Aveillan reportedly has a new take on it, and a new writer is currently being sought, and that Renner and Arterton will return. This is a little surprising, as Renner’s a very busy guy, and Arterton’s not exactly short on upcoming projects herself, not to mention the fact that she seems to have stepped away from these kinds of films after a glut of blockbusters a few years back.

Still, you can’t have Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters without Hansel and Gretel.

Aveillan will make his feature debut with the film, having made a career as a photographer and commercial director.

You can buy Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters – Extended Edition on Blu-ray for £6.95 at Amazon.co.uk. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
