Hannibal Season 3 spoilers: major character is recast

Which ghoulish Hannibal character will have a new face in Season 3?

Mason Verger is going to have a new face in Hannibal Season 3.

TV Line reports that Michael Pitt has left the third season of Bryan Fuller’s show and has been replaced by Joe Anderson (Horns, The Crazies, Across The Universe).

Pitt was superb as the garish, ghoulish sociopath who collected orphans’ tears, ruined his sister Margot’s (Katharine Isabelle) life and attempted to feed Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) to his pigs. However, he has chosen not to return to the role, leading to Anderson’s casting.

Anderson has been quietly putting in excellent work in character parts, recently excelling as Daniel Radcliffe’s drug-and-grief addled brother in Horns, so we’re confident he’ll be great, but it’s hard not to feel upset by this recast. Pitt nailed the character with his off-kilter turn, culminating in the gleefully grotesque episode in which he carved off pieces of his own face (“I’m full of myself!”).

Here’s hoping Anderson’s post-reconstruction turn will be as strong.

Here’s a picture from Anderson’s Instagram (via TVLine) of himself in make-up.
