Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Kurt Russell has got homework

Kurt Russell’s not ready to commit to playing Star Lord’s dad yet

The rumour that James Gunn wants Kurt Russell to play Star Lord’s as-yet-unnamed father in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 seems to have been well-founded, as the star of The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China and The Hateful Eight has addressed the question in an interview for his new Tarantino movie.

However, as he told Happy Sad Confused (via JoBlo), he’s got a bit of homework to do before he says yes or no to joining the Marvel universe. Specifically, he’s got to watch the first film and read the script for the second.

“I literally got a phone call two days ago about this,” he explained. “I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it.

I didn’t realize that the man [James Gunn] had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’ So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do.”

Which all seems very reasonable, doesn’t it? We absolutely love the idea of Russell joining the cast because, although we don’t know which character he’d be playing, the idea of Jack Burton and Peter Quill bouncing off each other just makes our hearts sing.

As for the rest of the cast, we know that the core group is back, as well as Benicio del Toro as The Collector and Karen Gillan as the villainous Nebula. Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy) has joined the cast in an unconfirmed role which could very well be Mantis, according to the internet. We also know that Matthew McConaughey turned down the film’s lead villain, which means that presumably they’re hunting for an actor of similar stardom to go up against the Guardians.

Either way, the film is aiming to get going early next year, so we should see more casting announcements soon.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 is released on 28 April 2017 in the UK. Keep up with the latest comic book movie news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
